Become a Notary

Information on examinations, registration and requirements

People who meet the following requirements can be admitted to the Notary examination:
  • Legal capacity;
  • Credibility;
  • Liechtenstein citizenship, or citizenship to another country signed up to the European Economic Area agreement (EEA signatory state), or a country with an equivalent agreement with Liechtenstein;
  • Successfully passed the bar examination or successfully completed Notary training in an EEA signatory state or Switzerland;
  • Three years’ experience conducting regular and effective activities as a lawyer or Notary in an EEA signatory state or Switzerland;

Applications for admission to the Notary Examination must be made to the Liechtenstein Chamber of Notaries during the application period.

Registration onto the List of Notaries

Those who meet the following requirements will be registered onto the List of Notaries upon application.
  • Legal capacity;
  • Credibility;
  • Liechtenstein citizenship, or citizenship to another country signed up to the European Economic Area agreement (EEA signatory state), or a country with an equivalent agreement with Liechtenstein;
  • Successfully passed the bar examination or successfully completed Notary training in an EEA signatory state or Switzerland;
  • Three years’ experience conducting regular and effective activities as a lawyer or Notary in an EEA signatory state or Switzerland;
  • Successfully passed the Notary Examination pursuant to art. 5 of notarial law NotarG;
  • Hold liability insurance in accordance with art. 20 of NotarG; and
  • Have a registered office in Liechtenstein, pursuant to art. 17.
The application for registration onto the List of Liechtenstein Notaries should be made to the Liechtenstein Chamber of Notaries.

Substitute Notaries

Those who meet the following requirements will be registered onto the List of Substitute Notaries at the request of the Chamber of Notaries.
  • Legal capacity;
  • Credibility;
  • Liechtenstein citizenship, or citizenship to another EEA signatory state, or a country with an equivalent agreement with Liechtenstein;
  • Successfully passed the bar examination or successfully completed Notary training in an EEA signatory state or Switzerland; and
  • Proof of liability insurance pursuant to art. 20, para. 2 of NotarG.
The application for registration onto the List of Substitute Notaries should be made jointly by the substituting Notary and the soon-to-be Notary substitute, to the Liechtenstein Chamber of Notaries.

A Substitute Notary can only act as a Substitute Notary for a specific Notary registered on the List of Substitute Notaries.
